Question 6

Question 6

The Correct Answer Is: TRUE

Matthew 10:1-4: "1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him."

Jesus wasn't going to be present on this earth forever: he would return to Heaven.  Therefore he needed to select men who would carry his message of salvation out to the whole world following his ascension.  From the Gospels, we find that Jesus selected what we would call ordinary men to do this task.  He didn't select the religious elite, he selected fishermen, tax collectors, zealots and the like for this ministry.  Why did he do this?  Because the religious elite were largely the people who rejected him.  These twelve men heard the words of Jesus and followed him during his teaching ministry, and so Jesus selected them to continue this ministry.  Only Judas Iscariot would not do so, because after betraying Jesus, he killed himself.  The other eleven though, Jesus gave power and knowledge from God so that they could do the things that needed to be done in order to spread the Gospel to the whole world.  What we have for us in the Bible is a product of their work.
