Question 9
The Correct Answer Is: FALSE
2 Peter 3:9: "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."
Some people believe that God's expectations are too high, or that God is just itching to send people to Hell. Such a belief couldn't be farther from the truth. God never expects something of us that we cannot do. We can control our sexual desires, which is why laws against fornication and adultery can be obeyed. We can control how we spend or obtain money, which is why laws against covetousness and greed can be obeyed. We can tell the truth, which is why laws against lying can be obeyed. In short, we can overcome temptation: it is within our grasp. But to help us, God gave us examples in the Bible of men and women who did overcome temptation, and the rewards they received for doing so. He also gave us examples of men and women who gave into temptation and the punishment they received for doing so. We can use all of these examples in order to assist us in fighting off temptation daily. But we can also simply use our knowledge of God's expectations for us to overcome temptation too. Jesus knew his scripture, and because of that, didn't sin. In order to finish the Bible in one year, you would only have to read on average 2.5 chapters per day. That doesn't actually require a lot of time when you think about it. And if everybody did that each day, you'd find that you would be sinning less and less, for God and his word would be the foundation of your life. And when you did sin, as a Christian, you would have that heart of repentance that would then seek God's forgiveness. And that is really what God desires: for all to come to him. He doesn't want to cast a single person into Hell. The reason that he will cast people into Hell though is because he won't accept us if we decide to live in sin. We must all repent of our sins, and obey Jesus. If we will do that, we will be saved. If we won't, we will be lost. The choice is entirely up to us.
