Question 5
The Correct Answer Is: TRUE
Hebrews 5:9: "And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him," (NKJV)
The subject of this chapter in Hebrews is Jesus. The 'He' in verse 9 is Jesus. So what the passage is saying is that when Jesus died on the cross for the remission of our sins, he gave us a way out of sin: a way to be saved. That way is through obedience to his words. But doesn't the Bible teach that salvation is received by grace through faith, apart from works (Ephesians 2:8-9)? Wouldn't that mean that the writer of Hebrews, in claiming that obedience is necessary (works), that he is disagreeing with Paul. Not if you truly understand what the Bible teaches on salvation as a whole. The Bible never teaches us that anything 'alone' can save us. Grace alone does not save us. Neither does faith alone. Neither does works alone. All of these three things are necessary in order to be saved. God's grace was extended to us, when he sent Jesus to die for our sins. But that doesn't mean that everybody receives his grace. Only those who have living faith (believe in Jesus) will receive God's grace. And faith is only living, if it is a faith that works (does the things God says) (James 2:14-26). Take any one of these things away, and one cannot be saved, because we cannot be saved in sin, and we cannot pay the price for sin that doesn't involve giving up our life. We all need Jesus. But he has only promised to save those who faithfully obey Him. It will be these people who go to Heaven.
